U.S OPEN
Roger Federer won the 2004 men’s title with a scintillating performance over Lleyton Hewitt. Federer won 6-0, 7-6, 6-0 and played
at a level that was described as ‘out of this planet’. The first set lasted 15 minutes as Hewitt faced an onslaught of sustained
power and aggression. The crowd were stunned by the one sided affair but knew they were witnessing an historic moment as
Federer became only the 4th person to win 3 Grand Slam singles titles in one calendar year. In the ladies final Kuznetsova
defeated compatriot Dementieva in straight sets to win her first Grand Slam title. The Russians walked away with three of the four
Grand Slam titles this year. Watch out for the next leg of the master series tennis coming up in October.
WAYNE RETIRES
South Africa’s most successful tennis player has decided to call it a day on the professional tennis circuit. It is fitting that Wayne
will end his competitive playing career in South Africa
playing against Greece in the next leg of the Davis
Cup. The tie will be
played in Pretoria from the 24th-26th September. Although Wayne brought high levels of stress into South African households
when he played on television and never fulfilled his potential of winning a Grand Slam title he still had a highly successful career.
His highest career singles ranking was No.6 in the world. He won 15 A.T.P. singles titles, winning on every surface and won
11 doubles titles. He won prize money in the region of $10-million. He won the Olympic doubles silver medal with Piet Norval
in 1992. He holds the record for the most successive Grand Slam appearances (56). In his career he beat Pete Sampras 6 times.
Wayne is going to relax with his family before deciding what to do. He has indicated that he would like to stay involved
in S.A. tennis. We salute a true champion.
