South Africa almost caused a major upset in the Davis Cup narrowly losing 3-2 to Germany.
On the first day Wesley Moodie played an impressive singles and found himself 2 sets up
against Kiefer but the moment seemed to get too big for him and he couldn’t finish off the
match losing in 5 sets. Wayne Ferreira filled in for the sick Rik de Voest but was very out of
sorts and not much competition for Haas and Schuttler in his two matches. Jeff Coetzee
teamed up with Moodie to win the doubles and in the match of Moodie’s life he beat Tommy
Haas to record his greatest ever victory. South Africa play Luxemborg away in September to
try and salvage another attempt at the big guns next year.

The club championships finals were played on the 26^th and 27^th February. The finals were
enjoyed by a good crowd. These are the results.

Men’s Singles: Gareth beat Peter 7-6, 6-0.

Ladies Singles: Rachelle beat Veronique 6-0, 6-0.

Men’s Doubles: Peter and Brendan beat Norman and Gareth 6-2, 6-2.

Ladies Doubles: Rachelle and Veronique beat Linda and Bettina 6-1, 6-2.

Mixed Doubles: Gareth and Veronique beat Brendan and Bettina 6-1, 6-3.

Mini Series

Advantage T.A. had 12 pupils playing in the Ellis Park mini series. The pupils gained valuable
experience playing under high levels of pressure. Tournament play is the best test of where
your game is and is a good guide as to where work needs to be done. Caitlin, Jenna U14
playing together and Genevieve U12 reached the semi-finals in the doubles. Jessica U12,
Veronique U14 reached the doubles finals and Veronique reached the semi-finals in the
singles narrowly losing to the number 3 in the country.

National Champ

We all have to face getting old and Gareth is sad to admit that he is eligible for Veterans
tennis in the 30+ age group. In the National Championships played at Groenkloof recently
Gareth won the doubles title and lost in the semi-finals of the singles.
